In the week since the Chandler Unified School District Governing Board member voted 4-1 to allow voters to decide in a Nov. 5 whether to approve a $487 million bond, it’s become clear the district and one board member have different priorities.
District leaders, including four board members, are convinced that’s how much money the district needs for the maintenance of its 5.5 million square feet of indoor space, 40-plus campuses and its furniture, technology and other facility needs.
Board member Kurt Rohrs is more concerned about the tax burden to property owners in the district and questions the need not only for certain projects, but for such high spending levels when the district’s enrollment is shrinking.
