Officers pursued the suspect for a short time before his car was involved in a collision with an uninvolved witness’s vehicle at the intersection of Pecos and McQueen roads. Chandler officers were able to box-in the suspect’s car and began giving commands to not move.
The suspect ignored commands and, a short time later, ran from his car armed with a rifle. That's when the officer-involved shooting occurred, the release states.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no injuries to Chandler police officers, and there was no additional threat to the public, the release states.
As of the evening of Aug. 21, Chandler Police hadn't released much information about the deceased suspect, other than to say he was male.
This critical force incident is being investigated by the Masa Police Department in its role as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, the release states.
