The Chandler Police Department has boosted its DUI patrols in the city over the Halloween weekend and will be assisting in stepped-upped efforts Saturday and Sunday in Tempe and Scottsdale.
Chandler will be using state grant funding to make area roads safer over the Halloween weekend, according to a release, with a concentration on the city that began Friday, Oct. 28, and will continue Monday, Oct. 31.
“We will be focused on impaired drivers within our city,” a police sergeant said.
The Chandler Police Department’s Traffic Section also will assist other agencies over the weekend.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, DUI task force officers will be in Tempe, and on Sunday, Oct. 30, officers will work in Scottsdale.
“Officers who take part in the DUI Task Force have received specialized training in the identification of driver impairment brought on by excessive alcohol consumption and illegal or prescribed drug usage,” Chandler authorities said in the release.
“The DUI task force's objective is to take intoxicated drivers off the road before they cause harm or experience the tragic outcomes that go along with the poor decision to drive while impaired.”
A grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will be used to fund officer overtime, equipment and related supplies for the DUI Task Force.
Neighboring police forces assist each other throughout the year during peak holiday celebration times, and GOHS grant money helps in those efforts.
