East Valley city council OKs $1.2M in contracts for homeless accommodations

At the start of each Chandler City Council annual budget cycle, at least some conversation is centered around how much to spend to abate homelessness, and which programs to fund or expand.

One program the district has decided to extend this year is called Operation Open Door. By unanimously approving its June 11 agenda, Council approved one-year extensions to a pair of $600,000 contracts with GAJANAN LLC and Metro Zona Hospitality LLC for homeless sheltering services.

Misty Gustafson, the city of Chandler’s homeless programs supervisor, took questions from the council at a study session. That included one from Council member Christine Ellis about how staff “teach a person to fish” in terms of managing finances, housing and other elements of adult life.
