Chandler Council: Municipalities have little say on cell towers

After getting input from nearly half a dozen residents and two attorneys, the Chandler City Council ended up approving a cell phone tower in the center of a South Chandler resort development Thursday.

The 65-foot-tall tower will be placed south of Waterview Drive, near the center of Sunbird Golf Resort along Riggs Road. The “monopine” wireless communication tower, created for Verizon, was the topic of a July 26 neighborhood meeting and took up nearly an hour of Thursday’s regular Chandler City Council meeting.

After Mayor Kevin Hartke called up three opponents and one proponent of the tower and read one comment card in opposition, he and other Council members, notably Vice Mayor Matt Orlando, questioned attorney Michael Powers on various aspects of the tower equipment and how the site was selected and will be used.
