Chandler Council incumbent has small lead in early returns

​The votes cast by tens of thousands of Chandlerites over the past few weeks began to be reported by Maricopa County Elections on Tuesday, Election Day, with it unclear exactly which of two runoff candidates will serve on the Chandler City Council starting in January.

In early returns, incumbent Christine Ellis holds a narrow lead over challenger Joseph Yang. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday reporting, Ellis had 30,174 of the first 73,634 votes counted, or 52.27%. Yang had 27,228 votes, or 47.17%.

The county says that’s a voter turnout of 44.31% so far. There are more than 117,000 registered voters in Chandler.
