Chandler Council gives first approval to animal-abuse ordinance

Long before a woman was arrested in late September in Chandler on animal abuse charges, the city government had been studying upgrading and further detailing its own policies and laws.

Chandler Police announced Sept. 23 it had arrested Sydney McKinley, 48, of the 1700 block of East Kesler Lane, and charged her with 55 counts of animal abuse, using state laws. While her cases are still pending, the Chandler City Council is going ahead with reforming its own code on the subject.

Thursday, council gave tentative approval to an ordinance that adds several new elaborate sections and deletes outdated language from a chapter of city code. The ordinance could get final approval from council at an early December meeting, which would make it effective in early January.
