Chandler awarded $2 million grant for micro-transit
The city of Chandler has been awarded a $2 million grant to launch a pilot micro- transit service in the southern part of town.
The grant was awarded through the Arizona Transportation Modernization Grant Program, which is a $20 million initiative solidifi ed in the state’s 2022 budget to modernize transportation for K-12 and improve access to safe and reliable transportation for students.
Through the two-year program, the city hopes to learn how to better serve students through a micro-transit van program for those who face transit barriers and are often traveling early in the morning or late at night. It will also help staffers better understand the demand for public transportation in South Chandler and if additional service is needed in specific locations.

Trips by day and time of day will also be closely monitored to identify any needs for additional or fewer vehicles at specific times. When the twoyear pilot program is complete, the program can serve as a model for other transit systems.
The new service will operate south of Chandler Boulevard and west of Price Road. Students in the area are at a further disadvantage because public transit options are limited compared to other parts of Chandler and the Phoenix metro area.
The funding awarded to the city will cover most of the startup costs and two years of operating costs for the service.
