The first four winners of The Chalk of the Town’s first annual Halloween Chalk Contest have been announced.
The Surprise-area Halloween-themed contest, sponsored by J&M Home Maintenance Services, awarded Rocky Valdivia (12-and-under age group), Sadie Countryman (13 to 17) and Kelcey Ruiz (adults) prizes for winning their age brackets. Sable Fallon, 6, also won the Chalkers’ Choice award.
Surprise resident Robin Hahn staged the contest for Surprise residents in late October through early this month.
Rocky’s drawing depicted dinosaurs. Sadie drew a skull. And Ruiz won Best in Show for her drawing of an octopus.
Fallon, who was a personal favorite choice of Hahn’s, was honored for researching chalking techniques and encouraging her parents to participate in the contest, too.
“Her pumpkin had personality and was very pretty,” Hahn wrote on Facebook.
Hahn said 430 people voted in the contest.
“The work received was impressive to say the least,” Hahn wrote. “The use of color, imagination and technique was abundant.”
Prizes were donated by a host of local businesses, including J&M Home Maintenance, Gathered Grounds, Troub’s Butcher Shop and Piñatas Guerrero.
Other businesses and individuals that contributed were Fuzzy’s Sports Grill, Samurai’s Comics, Simply Raw Honey, MAD Bakers, MC Art Supplies of Waco, Texas, Epicure, Mojilife, Sweet Cheryl’s, April Burleson, Emery Bush and Hahn.
