A side-by-side vehicle accident in Phoenix has left one teen dead and another in the hospital with critical injuries.
Nolan Allen Coffland, 16, a student at Centennial High School in Peoria, suffered fatal injures in the accident. The second person in the crash was also sent to the hospital with critical injuries, but police have not updated his status.
Phoenix Police officers responded to a paved jogging path in the area of 47th Avenue and Cholla Street regarding a single-vehicle collision involving a side-by-side vehicle and resulting in serious injuries to the two occupants, 5:15 p.m., Feb. 6.
When police officers and fire personnel arrived, they found the two teens, one adult male and Coffland, both with serious injuries. Phoenix Fire Department personnel extricated both teens from the vehicle and both were taken to nearby hospitals. Coffland did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead. The adult male remains in the hospital and is listed in critical condition.
Preliminary information suggests the driver of the side-by-side vehicle lost control and collided with a nearby fence, police say. After going through the fence, the vehicle fell several feet down an embankment before coming to rest.
Correction: An initial version of this article stated that Coffland was the driver of the vehicle. That is incorrect. He was the passenger.
