Carole Ann (Obye) Hutchinson

Carole, 75, of St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away on December 12, 2023. She was born to Ferne (Dunn) and Charles H. Obye, Jr., on May 22, 1948, in Sioux City, Iowa. Carole graduated from East High School in Sioux City in 1966. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City and graduated in 1970. Carole married David Hutchinson, and they had three daughters: Sarah Hutchinson, Kathryn (Katie) Hutchinson, and Jill Hutchinson. Carole and David were divorced shortly thereafter, and Carole spent her time working, raising her children, and spending time with much-beloved friends in St. Paul. Carole met Douglas White of St. Paul in 1995 and they married in 2004.
Carole was active in many clubs in high school, including band (playing flute), pep club, and student council. She was athletic and a member of GRA, as well as a cheerleader for the East High Black Raiders. While attending Morningside College, Carole was again a cheerleader and cheered for the Morningside Maroon Chiefs. Her father was the Morningside basketball coach at the time, so both she and her father were all in for the Morningside team. Carole majored in P.E. and enjoyed staying active, including running/walking, tennis, swimming, and yoga. She was proud to work nearly 30 years at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis. In retirement, Carole developed an interest in book club and enjoyed traveling with her husband to a number of countries and visiting their children and grandchildren. In the later years of her life, Carole became a pickleball player and was a real competitor.
Lake Okoboji was a special place for Carole. She worked there (Village West) one summer during her high school years. She and her children visited her parents there many different summers. She and husband Douglas White spent several summers there. There were many trips to Lake Okoboji.
From 2016 on, Carole and her husband continued to live in St. Paul, but happily spent the cold winters in Sun City, Arizona. Carole passed away in Sun City.
Carole is survived by her husband, Douglas White of St. Paul; her three children, Sarah Hutchinson (husband Bret Pearson), Katie Hutchinson (husband Wayne Chow), and Jill Hutchinson, all now living in Portland, Oregon; her three grandchildren, Phineas (Finn) Pearson, Kaia Hutchinson, and Collette Chow; and her brother, Douglas Obye of Phoenix, Arizona.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marilyn Joyce (Obye) Finstad.
