Carlson: Library upgrades should be cost- effective

Posted

Plans for a redesigned library may cost $4.5 million to $6.5 million. This includes add-on rooms, outdoor courtyards, “quiet spaces,” a study room, classrooms, etc.

My questions are, why aren’t we proposing using spaces currently available in the recreation centers for these functions? Wouldn’t it be more cost-effective to use space we have rather than build out new space that will be sporadically used? I urge the leadership parties to look at more creative use of available space rather than spend money to create more space.

I understand that updates to current fixtures are needed. Good. Update them.

If tables are too heavy, buy lightweight tables.

If carpet is worn, re-carpet, or put down tile.

If the classroom space is too small, rent the Social Hall. Or share space with a club.

These are the things mentioned in the article. All together, I doubt they would cost $4.5 million. We don’t need courtyards. That’s not the function of a library. Let’s think before we spend our money. Come to think of it, why did we hire Dunkin Architects LLC to create a redesigned facility without asking ourselves what is really needed?

Make no mistake, I like the library. I just hate wasting money.
