Career prep program at Peoria Unified approved after contract changes

Governing board adds DEI protections

This year, Abigail Herrera, a senior at Ironwood High School, had an opportunity to work as a paid marketing intern with nonprofit Oakley’s Oath, whose mission is to educate residents and businesses about keeping pets safe when repairs are being done at home.

At the May 29 Peoria Unified governing board meeting, Herrera spoke publicly about how her time in the internship was one of the most valuable experiences she ever had because she was working in the real world, applying things she learned in school.

She was afforded the internship through ElevateEDAZ, a career preparation program offered for free to the district from the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation.
