Car hits, kills 93-year-old man crossing Phoenix street

Eli Johnson, 93, was killed after being hit by a car Wednesday while walking across Thunderbird Road in north Phoenix, police said.

Officers responded to the intersection of 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road at about 5:35 a.m. Nov. 1 and found Johnson suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The woman driving the SUV that struck the man stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, according to a release.

Detectives said they learned from witnesses that Johnson was crossing Thunderbird Road south in the marked cross walk against the do-not-walk signal when the eastbound SUV hit him, police said.

An investigation is continuing.
