Cameras, not elderly road tests, would curb Valley accidents

OPINION — I read with interest a letter from Dawn Exarhopoulos advocating road test for elderly license renewals. I would like to add a couple of facts to the story and also personal observations.

Looking at the accident rates amongst drivers by age group, in 2024, drivers over 75 had the lowest accident percentage in Arizona of any age group, both fatal and non-fatal. Over 75s were involved in around 1% of all accidents, while the 25 to 34 age group was in involved in over 30%.

Having taken a driving test when I arrived in Arizona from the U.K., I found the word test was a misnomer. I was strapped into my car waiting for the “test” to begin when the examiner told me I had passed and climbed out of the car.
