Calvin C. Goode's sons plan to turn late Phoenix councilmember's house, office into affordable housing

Sons aim to continue father's legacy by serving people

Do you preserve the history of a place or continue the legacy of a person? Or is there a way to do both?

That was the discussion at the Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission on Monday. The sons of late Phoenix City Councilmember Calvin C. Goode informed the commission of their plans to turn the home and of their father and mother, Georgie Goode, into affordable housing units.

Goode was the longest-serving member in city of Phoenix history, serving 22 years, 1972-1994, as well as a figure of the Civil Rights Movement in Phoenix. His three sons, Vernon, Jerard and Randolph, came before the commission on Monday, with Jerard speaking for the family. Jerard said one thing their father wasn’t able to totally fulfill during his time on council was his commitment to affordable housing.
