Back in the 1980s during the Reagan administration there was a requirement for broadcasters to offer equal time to opposing viewpoints.
What that meant was that if one political party spoke out on a particular subject the media outlet would have to offer equal time to the opposition. That requirement fell by the wayside.
Fast forward to today. Now podcasters, cable TV stations, radio pundits and all others can spout their opinions without any opposite viewpoints or balance. This requires listeners/viewers to be their own filters.
When I was in school, we were taught to go to at least three sources for information. The voting public does not do this.
Of course, this leads to much misinformation being believed as gospel. Consequently, our politicians are being elected by uninformed voters.
Which brings us to today: calling it news does not make it news.
