CAC establishes scholarship in former Olympian’s name

The Central Arizona College Foundation has established a scholarship in the name of late Olympian and former CAC Athletic Director George Young.

Young was a four-time Olympian, competing in the 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics. He won the bronze medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, according to a press release.

He was hired by Central Arizona College in 1971 as an instructor and the cross country/track and field coach. Two years later he was promoted to athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1996.

Young led his CAC cross country team to a Junior College National Championship in 1988. Young died on Nov. 8, 2022.

In remembrance of Young, his wife, Nancy, gifted a contribution to the CAC Foundation to establish the George Young Memorial Scholarship.

Beginning this spring, a $500 scholarship will be awarded each academic year to a CAC cross country runner. To be eligible, applicants must be a full-time student, Arizona resident and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, the release stated.
