Businesses are making things difficult for the older generation

Posted

I’m not sure if this complaint is strictly for us senior citizens or not. It seems like manufacturers and other services are making it difficult for the older generation.

I recently purchased a package of AAA batteries, and it took me almost 30 minutes to open it because it was encased in this heavy plastic as so many things are these days. In addition, when you purchase some items which come with a set of instructions, the writing is so small you need a magnifying glass to read them.

I recently went for doctor’s appointment and the receptionists handed me a tablet and told me to follow the instructions for check-in while they sat there. Many of the people in the waiting area were confused as to how to fill out the data.

Although I think I’m reasonably computer literate, many of these things are even difficult for me. When you leave the doctor’s office, there is a text on your phone with a survey asking how your appointment went. I’m not sure if this is an issue that our legislators need to look into, but something has to be done.

Businesses assume everyone has a computer or cellphone, and that’s not true. It also appears that many doctors’ offices have signed up for this service that when you make an appointment, you get five or six texts reminding you of your appointment and asking you to fill out information in a patient portal that you’ve already given them.

 Something has to be done.
