Bus crashes into Mesa home, 8 injured

A Valley Metro bus crashed into a Mesa home Monday night near Broadway Road and Spencer, police said.

Eight people were injured in the crash that involved several other vehicles.

Five of the eight people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The house sustained possible structural damage and has been fenced off for safety reasons, officials said.

Authorities said the bus was heading west on Broadway about 6:30 p.m. when a truck traveling south on Spencer ran a stop sign and collided with it.

The bus swerved to the left, across all lanes of traffic and crashed into several parked cars before hitting the house at 1000 block of East Broadway Road, police said, adding the house was damaged extensively.

The driver and the passenger of the truck - a man and woman - fled the scene on foot and have not been found, police said.

The injuries included:

  • Two residents inside the house were transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
  • One person was sitting in his vehicle on the property attempting to leave, when the bus struck his vehicle. He suffered a possible broken arm.
  • Three passengers in the bus suffered minor injuries from a possible broken rib, knee and back pain, and scratches and abrasions.
  • Two passengers in the truck have unknown injuries since they fled the scene.
  • Three people were treated at the scene and did not want further medical attention.
