Arizona’s energy is getting cleaner, but new tech needed to reach zero emissions

Arizona’s energy is getting cleaner, but it will need technological advances before it can be fully clean.

The Valley’s major energy utilities say their on pace for their goals to transition to renewable energy, but officials from both Arizona Public Service Co. and Salt River Project say new technology is likely needed before Arizona can have a fully carbon-free energy portfolio that is still reliable and affordable.

Both APS and SRP are making strides toward cleaner energy every year, by retiring power sources such as coal and adding more renewables like wind and solar. But Eric Massey, APS’s director of sustainability, said the road map to being fully carbon free is not yet known.
