Brown: Congress should take measured approach

Posted

Remember all the way back to early 2023 when Congress was up in arms about banning TikTok?

It’s funny to think that despite all the noise, no ban has ever come close to being implemented. This was probably due to a wide variety of reasons, from the fact that the app is hugely popular among our youth to the fact that businesses need it to the fact that it probably was never legal (and likely unconstitutional) to ban a social media app anyway.

All I know is that I’m glad that calmer heads prevailed in Congress and the Biden Administration, because despite the flaws that inherently come with using social media, apps like TikTok are hugely beneficial to small and local businesses who are trying to get their name out there and build a customer base.

So when the next “sky is falling” issue comes up in 2024, I hope Congress remembers to take the same patient and measured approach.
