Brown: Casual vandalism a Sun City problem

Posted

I felt the need to express my concern over vandalism going on in my neighborhood. Living here the past eight years, I have seen adult children staying with parents, grandchildren being dropped off for day care staying with grandparents, an adult son staying at one house and living there for the past six years. I keep my mouth shut over this because nobody in my association seemed concerned about water usage and staying past the length of stay in Sun City. Then I get yelled at by a granddaughter of one resident who is maybe 18. I was standing minding my own business and I hear a girl hollering something about wasting water running down the street. I turned around and I replied saying that is from the other end of the street I live on, not mine.

A board member overheard the girl hollering. I said to her why holler at me, I’m not an HOA board member. I pointed out to her to turn around and I politely told her to speak to that gentleman about wasting water. Then the grandmother and another younger granddaughter walked over to my rear yard, looking at my sculpted bush — my guess about 30 years old and in good shape — and the grandmother who was holding hands with the granddaughter and let go and the girl leaned backwards on the bush and sat on it. Well that killed it.

I was furious seeing that out of my window. I did not want to confront them. I was upset. They both hurried back to the house two doors away from me. Not one word was said.

Then over the phone, the grandmother said she is too old and hung up on me when I asked why the granddaughter fell on my plant on purpose.

A few months later, the grandmother screamed at me “Hi, Gary,” as a friendly gesture like I would forget what she had done. I politely yelled back to ask her to stay off my property. Boy was I angry at her. Then her husbanded sided with her.
This is what happens when rules are not being enforced. This to me is vandalism in broad daylight, and this is what happens when nothing is being done. Parents are civilized to be responsible for their own actions, and then children follow the same pattern of vandalizing people’s property.

I asked why. What was the purpose of laying on top of my bush. They walked away not being considerate of people’s rights. I moved to live in Sun City for peace and quiet. Seems to be Sun City is losing its tradition. Will it turn into metropolitan Phoenix? Looks to be heading in that direction when crime is high here.

If people living in Sun City want to vandalize properties, then they need to move. I have been in Arizona for more than 68 years. I heard so much about the retirement community of Sun City. It is the Sun City I do not know anymore. What happened to the rules? I live in the Togalays HOA. Only one board member sees what I’ve been going through. I need to express my concerns about buying a plact to live in a quiet, peaceful area. I am sure I’m not the only Sun City homeowner who has to deal with young adult children overstaying. I am sure they are down on their luck or out of work. But please respect other people’s properties.
