Mesa boy shot walking home from school released from hospital

The 13-year-old Mesa boy, who was shot in the shoulder walking home from school Wednesday, has been released from the hospital, police said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident that occurred about 2:50 p.m. Aug. 30 near 600 N. Stewart and had not identified any suspects.

“One of theories we are exploring is that this could have been completely random,” police said in a release on Aug. 31.

When officers arrived at the shooting scene, they found the 13-year-old with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and began first aid and along with Mesa Fire Department personnel. The boy was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Through investigation it was learned that the victim and two of his friends were walking home from school and hanging out in the area of 600 North Stewart when the victim felt pain in his shoulder,” police said in an earlier statement.

“When he checked his shoulder, he had what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The victim and his friends then ran to the victim’s house and called the police.”

Mesa police are asking for the public’s help if they were in the area and saw anything that may be of value to the investigation – call 480-644-2211.
