Bosak: Silent majority needs to speak up on Sun City West recall

A small group of malcontents decide in 2012 to make Sun City West a “better place.” They propose three ill-conceived and destructive amendments to the bylaws.

• Make golf profitable. If necessary, raise rates 40% and close a course.

• Construction experts, top notch staff, oversight committees and the governing board can’t decide what is needed on projects over $100,000 so have the community vote on all of them.

• Use the Federal government COLA to determine dues increases. The four years around 2012, 2011-2014, the average COLA was 1.7%. Our revenue would have been severely compromised.

They made the ballot, thought they could count on Sun City West resident apathy, but surprise, 15,000 people stood outside in line waiting to vote as we did not have electronic voting then; 13,000 appropriately rejected all three proposals, 87%! Leave our community alone was the message. We like things just the way they are. The silent majority spoke loud and clear.

In 2021, a small group of malcontents held the governing board hostage. The disease was the three “Ds” — divisiveness plus disrespect equals dysfunction. Don’t believe me? Go online and view the May and June board meeting videos. Reach your own conclusion. The result was the recall of a director by a vote of 78%.

In 2023, a small group of malcontents is once again attempting a power grab of the governing board. Since three are leaving at the end of the fiscal year and three are new to the board, that leaves only three to target. Three good men. Three productive, reasonable and honorable volunteers. Makes no difference, let’s find some “stuff” about them. Change the facts, the narratives and context to make them out to be dangerous to the community. Inadequate in their responsibilities.

It is a guarantee that if they are successful in this recall we will morph back exactly to where we were in 2021, the three “Ds.”
So why all three? Because this is all about firing the current general manager. They need six votes to stack the board with similarly misguided members.

Make no mistake. This is not about issues. It is a vindictive vendetta against the person who has achieved great success in the four years he has been here. Sun City West rated top 5 retirement community in all of the nation. Successfully led us through the unknown minefield known as COVID. Solved decades-long violations of tax codes and RR&P noncompliance issues by dozens of Sun City West residents. But most importantly, he leads a professional, responsive and superbly knowledgeable staff that ensure our pleasure every single day.

We all moved here to enjoy our retirement. I have been fortunate to do just that for 22 years. I am so tired of the totally unnecessary drama created by these small groups of malcontents. So rise up Sun City West silent majority! We need all of you to vote no! Tell them once again, we are more than satisfied with the way things are. Put your personal agendas in a trash heap and leave us to enjoy ourselves and each other.
