Black Theatre Troupe brings ‘Black Nativity’ to Phoenix stage

Holiday production features gospel music, dance

Black Theatre Troupe will celebrate the holiday season with Langston Hughes’ “Black Nativity,” running Nov. 27-Dec. 6 at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center in downtown Phoenix. The musical retells the birth of Jesus through Hughes’ poetry, gospel music and dance, drawing on the traditions of the Black church.

Directed by Walter Belcher, the production features four-time Emmy Award winner and former 12News anchor Kim Covington as one of two alternating narrators. She shares the role with Charity Evans, an elder at Greater Hope Christian Church. Cast members include Aria Robinson as the Angel, Cherish Hayes as Mary, and Alexander Patrick-Rolando as Joseph.

This year’s production also features a new partnership with Phoenix-area chapters of Jack and Jill of America, a national organization focused on leadership development, community service and cultural enrichment. Young participants will take part in the Bethlehem village scenes and assist with audience services, gaining experience both onstage and behind the scenes.
