The Black Fire near Tonto National Monument was 40% contained Thursday afternoon as fire crews worked to protect nearby homes and structures, fire officials said.
So far, the fire — which is south of Roosevelt Lake and near the Tonto National Monument — has burned more than 11,000 acres of wildland since the blaze started on Thursday, July 11, said Emery Johnson, spokeswoman for the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 3.
An unknown number of residents have evacuated the area near Roosevelt since July 14, the spokeswoman said.
