Benny Pina cooking up new era for Surprise police

Benny Pina probably isn’t like most police chiefs in the Valley.

The 55-year-old likes punk rock music, is a self-confessed bookworm and cooks for relaxation.

“I tell everybody here I’m a closet nerd,” the new police chief of Surprise recently said in the conference room of the Surprise Police Department.
