Audits have found “significant systemic issues” and collected more than 2,000 complaints in 2023 at state-licensed group homes where individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities are cared for, according to reports from Disability Rights Arizona, a nonprofit law firm mandated by the state to investigate the homes.
The complaints ranged from hundreds of allegations of potential abuse and safety as well as more than 20 allegations of potential deaths in 2023.
On a broader note, nearly 60% of the group homes were not in compliance with the policies of Division of Developmental Disabilities, the Arizona agency that oversees group homes.
