Beaudry: No need to reinvent the wheel in Sun City

Posted

This board of directors have said they would like to take Sun City in a more youthful direction. It makes me think of what that means.

Some of their ideas are of course more pickleball, installing a climbing wall, even closing one of the bowling alleys and making it a virtual entertainment center. Fine ideas, all of them. It does make me think of why we want things such as that.

I sold real estate here for a couple of years. Houses in Sun City sell fast. Some has to do with the amenities we have now. By moving in a more youthful direction, what do we gain? I went to the last meeting they talked about insurance rates going up. I heard up by 30%, increased claims the reason.

What happens to those rates when we add more pickleball courts, injury stats in that sport are pretty high. One thing I have not heard is the chance of losing our overlay that keeps this place a 55-plus community. Just think of what losing the overlay would do, we would get to pay school taxes. I can think of many things I could do with the money that increased taxes would cause.

When trying to look at the larger picture, this question comes to mind. Why reinvent the wheel? Upgrade what we have, keep this place one of the best places to live in Arizona.
