Surprise delays decision on buffer for utility battery systems

The Surprise City Council will continue its discussions about setbacks for battery energy storage systems from existing homes later this summer after not being able to settle on a number this week.

The council on June 16 debated a setback of 100 feet versus 1,500 feet, a drastic difference, with council members divided on what to do.

In the end, councilors decided to discuss it again after its July summer break. Assistant City Manager Lloyd Abrams said city staff will present options at 500, 1,000 and 1,500 feet during the next discussion.
