Banner poison centers see increase in fentanyl overdoses in Arizona

M30 tablets are cheap but lethal

The war on drugs appears to be far from over, with fentanyl overdoses increasing by the day.

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, more than five people die of an opioid overdose every day in the state. But while heroin and oxycontin used to be the main opioids of concern for health and public safety officials, fentanyl has become the most potent — and the most lethal — of the three.

“Fentanyl is the most common adulterant in almost all street drugs in our community right now, and even in very small amounts can be fatal,” said Dr. Daniel Brooks, medical director of the Banner Poison and Drug Information Center. “We are working with the state and county health departments to warn Arizonans of the dangers of these drugs.”
