Banner Health initiates mandatory masking due to flu surge

Posted

Banner Health is initiating mandatory masking at all its facilities, including those in Scottsdale, as a result of a significant surge in seasonal influenza.

The decision is made and applied to facilities in all six states that Banner Health resides, according to a press release. Masking will be required for all patients, visitors and staff in all Banner locations where patients are present until further notice. Patients will not be required to mask in their hospital rooms, and the public is encouraged to mask in non-patient areas.

Masks will be available at all public entrances, according to the press release. These measures are to combat the surge of a new subvariant of influenza A, H3N2, which has higher infection rates but seasonal vaccination remains highly effective against it.

Banner Health mentioned tips you can take to stem the spread of the flu:

  • Wear a mask in crowded areas such as airports or public transportation
  • Handwash or use hand sanitizer frequently
  • Stay home if feeling ill
  • Stay current on recommend vaccines, such as the flu vaccine
