Banner Health ER sees virus increase

RSV diagnosis for seniors

This time of year Banner Health emergency departments are filled with seniors struggling with illness.

According to Banner Health medical experts, respiratory syncytial virus in adults is at a high.

Dr. William Mostow, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center medical director, said RSV in adults is a silent epidemic. The virus gets passed the same way children pass it, with droplets in the air. But he said when an adults 65 and older get exposed and have heart or lung disease or is immunocompromised, those individuals are at more serious risk and 5% of adults who are hospitalized with RSV die each year.
