Avondale will host 5K to benefit veterans’ education scholarships

10th annual event also will celebrate Veterans Day

Avondale's 10th Annual Veterans Day 5k Run/Walk and Ceremony is open for registration.

The run, held at Estrella Mountain Community College, 3000 N. Dysart Road, in partnership with the city of Avondale, benefits veterans who face financial barriers to education.

The city’s parks and recreation and police and fire departments will be on site to provide activities for residents. The event takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

Proceeds of the Vet Fun Run benefit the Dr. Ernest Lara–EMCC Veterans Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship assists veterans attending Estrella Mountain who may face financial hardships in pursuing or completing their education. Veteran students face an increased risk of poverty and homelessness. Also, the post-911 GI Bill covers only 36 months of education.

“Veterans frequently experience challenges and hardships during the transition from military to civilian life,” U.S. Army veteran Nathan Kelley, EMCC’s veteran services department manager, shared in a press release. “It is important to be able to provide support when and where it is needed.”

Local gyms will be hosting four exercise stations during the 5K. Following the run is a Warrior’s Breakfast sponsored by Filliberto’s and Dutch Bros for all attendees.

The city of Avondale will then host a Veterans Day ceremony.

Tickets also available for a VIP experience after the activities which will include a catered brunch with beverage tastings courtesy of 8-Bit Aleworks.

Cost to register for the event is $11.11 for veterans and military members, $25 for general registration, and a minimum donation of $50 for the VIP experience.
