The statement made by Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, deputy director of the ACLU Criminal Law Reform Project, that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and county politicians have created a “fake cost boogeyman to get them off the hook” is at best a blatant misrepresentation.
This ACLU representative claims that MCSO is “dragging its heels on compliance instead of just fixing the constitutional problems.” The ACLU completely ignores the fact that MCSO is over 90% in compliance with the first two court orders and 59% in compliance with the third order of the Melendres Court.
What is alarming is not any action by MCSO in moving toward full compliance with court orders, but that the ACLU is obstructing every effort to do so, rather than cooperating in helping MCSO move this matter forward to complete compliance.
MCSO continues to move forward in good faith to come into compliance with the remainder of the court orders, despite the obstruction put forth by the ACLU.
