ASU’s first-ever planetary mission kicks off with an appeal for space scholars

Arizona State University's first planetary mission to an asteroid called Psyche will launch Oct. 12, and researchers hope it will grow an interest in space and higher education for Arizona children.

Psyche is an asteroid mainly made of metal. It is considered the remnants of an ancient planet’s core. NASA’s ASU-led craft will journey 2.2 billion miles to the asteroid under the command of the mission’s principal investigator and ASU professor, Lindy Elkins-Tanton.

The mission is the first tangible study into planetary cores.
