ASU confirms Charlie Kirk vigil set for Monday after brief controversy

A vigil for Charlie Cook will take place Monday at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona State University officials confirmed Saturday.

The vigil is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

“All reports that the vigil was not proceeding or that student groups were being charged are false,” ASU officials stated in a release on Saturday.

Sen. Jake Hoffman, R-Queen Creek, posted on X Saturday that ASU “has felt the heat and seen the light and done a complete 180 — now offering to cover all the expenses and allowing the students to hold their prayer vigil in honor of Charlie Kirk free of charge.

“You should have done this from the beginning. Be better next time.”

In an earlier post, Hoffman said he had been contacted by sources close to the ASU chapter of College Republicans.

“Less than 48 hours before a planned memorial service, (ASU) has decided to make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE for the student club to host a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk.”

He continued: “ASU do better. Be better. Be human. Right now this is some SICK & DISGUSTING behavior from my alma mater. FIX THIS NOW.”

ASU announced that a clear-bag policy will be in effect for those attending the vigil and that security will be on site.

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed during rally at Utah State University on Sept. 10. He was known for traveling to college campuses around the country and debating college students.

His work at the Phoenix-based Turning Point was considered instrumental in getting President Donald Trump elected to a second term in 2024.
