As public transit expands, South Tempe left out of plans

Officials say routes are determined by need

With downtown Tempe set to open its new Streetcar system this spring and Valley Metro’s expansion of the light rail in Phoenix, the Valley’s public transit continues to grow along with its population.

But some areas aren’t as lucky.

Tempe Streetcar won’t go below the U.S. 60 into South Tempe, the city confirmed, and there are no plans to do so. The last light rail stop in the city is at Apache and the 101 before heading off to Mesa. The only public transit options offered to residents in South Tempe are several local bus lines and the Orbit Saturn. Residents also can schedule Paratransit rides to get around town if they are seniors or are disabled.
