SUN CITY WEST - Arthur G. Matthies, passed away on Sept. 12, 2012 in Sun City West, Az. He was born on Jan. 18, 1916 in Rochester, N.Y. Art Matthies was a loving father and husband, an honest, trustworthy man who was inquisitive, genuine and easily made friends. In his retirement years, he supported the health care community through his leadership on the Sun Health Foundation Board of Directors. Those who came to know Art will remember his smile and generally positive attitude. For over 20 years he held numerous volunteer board positions at Sun Health including Foundation President as well as Building & Grounds and Planning committees. Most recently he helped with the planning of the $40 million expansion of Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital; doubling its size. His business career consisted of 46 years with the Gleason Works, a machine tool firm in Rochester, N.Y. He rose to the post of Senior Vice-President and Director. During his career at Gleason Works, he had the opportunity to build a factory in Belgium and was awarded the Order of Leopold II by King Baudouin, recognizing Art's service to Belgium and contributions to good relations between Belgium and the U.S. Art was a Charter Member of Briarwood Country Club in 1981. He was a proprietary member for 27 years. At age 85, Art made a hole-in-one at a Sun Health Foundation Golf Benefit, winning a new car. Art is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alaine and Ed O'Connor of Sun City West; and daughter, Linda Marsters of Fairport, N.Y.; plus five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in March, 2011. He will be missed by all who came to know him. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at The Heritage Tradition in Sun City West.
