An armed robbery suspect was in the hospital Saturday after officers used a patrol vehicle to prevent the man from pulling a gun on them, police said.

At about 3:15 p.m. June 7, officers were called to an armed robbery at a hotel near 48th Avenue and McDowell Road where they learned from witnesses the suspect took a woman’s purse and left on foot, armed with a handgun.

Approximately an hour later, officers found a man matching the description with the stolen purse at a gas station at 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road.

The officers called for backup, but the man spotted them and briefly entered a business coming outside, police said.

“Officers activated their lights and siren in a parking lot to get the man to stop. The man continued and ran onto McDowell Road. As the officers followed in their patrol vehicle, the man reached toward his waistband where officers saw a handgun,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.

“The officer driving the patrol vehicle responded by hitting the man with the patrol car. After the collision, officers moved in to arrest the man. A handgun was removed from the suspect’s waistband.”

Fire department personnel responded to treat the man for injuries suffered after getting run over by one of the patrol vehicle’s tires. He was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Once released from the hospital, the man, who has not been identified, will be booked for multiple felonies, including armed robbery, aggravated assault against a police officer and weapons violations, police said.
