Arizona's summertime’s comin’ — and drowning danger

Swim lessons urged to prevent deaths around pools, lakes

It doesn’t take a weatherman to know summer has nearly arrived in the Valley of the Sun — and with the triple-digit temperatures come preventable drownings and other fatal incidents around pools and lakes in Arizona.

According to a report from the Arizona Child Fatality Review Team, there were 19 drowning deaths in the state during 2019 — and all of them were preventable.

Nearly half of victims were ages 1 to 4; 63% were male, while 37% were female; and substance abuse was a factor in less than 6 of those cases. Thirty-seven percent of drownings occurred at open bodies of water, while 47% happened in pools, hot tubs or spas, according to the November 2020 report.
