Arizonans’ generosity brightens holidays, transforms lives

The holiday season is not only a time for joy and celebration, but it’s also a time to give back to those who are less fortunate. As we gather with our loved ones to reflect on the past year, make memories and enjoy the festivities, it’s also important to think about how we can make a meaningful difference in our community.

Here at Cancer Support Community Arizona, we see firsthand how acts of generosity, both big and small, can transform lives. Here are a few ways you can help make things brighter for those in need.

Gift your time by volunteering for a cause you care about

Volunteering can be a deeply rewarding way to make an impact during the holiday season. Consider spending an afternoon with your loved ones at a local nonprofit, helping to serve meals or sort donations. There are plenty of nonprofits in the Valley that can use extra support.

Volunteering is a great way to share the spirit of giving and create lasting memories with the ones you love most.

Give a donation as a meaningful gift

Consider making a donation to a nonprofit in honor of someone you care about. Donating in honor of someone, to a cause they care deeply about, demonstrates thoughtfulness and is sure to leave an impact. Many nonprofits can even provide a personalized acknowledgment to let your loved one know about the impact their gift has made.

Giving in this way creates a ripple effect of kindness. It not only supports vital community programs but also inspires others to consider charitable giving as a meaningful alternative to traditional holiday gifts.

The holidays remind us of what truly matters: love, connection and the well-being of our community. Whether you choose to give through the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, volunteer your time or make a donation as a gift, your generosity has the power to change lives. After all, the best gifts are the ones that give back.

Participate in the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit

Giving to a qualifying Arizona nonprofit can directly reduce your state tax liability. The Arizona Charitable Tax Credit allows taxpayers to donate up to $470 for individuals or $938 for couples filing jointly to qualifying organizations. Donors can receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state taxes. This means your contribution not only helps nonprofits provide vital services but also benefits you financially.

At CSCAZ, we are a nonprofit that is fully funded by the generosity of our community and every dollar contributed through the tax credit helps us continue to provide free social and emotional support to anyone impacted by cancer.

From support groups and wellness programs to community events, your gift ensures that no one faces cancer alone. This holiday season, why not redirect your tax dollars to a cause you care about?

Editor’s note: Julie Dunnigan is CEO of Cancer Support Community Arizona, a nonprofit that provides emotional and social support for anyone impacted by cancer through 100 free, in-person bilingual programs in greater Phoenix, the Verde Valley and Flagstaff, and via livestream to others throughout Arizona. Reader reactions, pro or con, are welcomed at AzOpinions@iniusa.org.
