Arizona water faces uncertain future

From Colorado River negotiations and searches for new sources, to farming and data centers, there are many questions about the state’s water supplies

Water is a serious subject in Arizona, with uncertainties ranging from climate change and severe drought to diminishing supplies.

Determining where the state’s water issues will be five to 10 years down the road is a fluid situation, but most experts agree it will be tenuous until final negotiations are made on a new water-sharing agreement to lay out how water is portioned out to the Colorado River basin states.

A new agreement would need to be made before the current guidelines expire in September 2026, but the federal government is pushing for a much more immediate response.
