Arizona tops 163,000 cases of coronavirus

The Arizona Department of Health Services is reporting over 163,000 cases of COVID-19 as of Monday morning.

In Arizona, there are 163,827 cases and 3,304 deaths of the novel coronavirus, up 3,304 cases and down 1 death from Sunday morning, respectively. That computes to a 2.02% death rate of confirmed cases in the state.

"Today's number of COVID-19 deaths reflects the subtraction of a death compared to yesterday's count," the AZDHS stated via Twitter, pointing to the drop from 3,305 deaths on Sunday to 3,304 on Monday. "This is due to the deduplication & of a death that may have been reported twice, likely by both a lab & healthcare provider."

The number of cases could be far higher because many people have not been tested, and some can be infected without feeling sick. Monday’s numbers are usually lower than other days.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 109,190 cases and 1,734 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county. State and county numbers differ depending on reporting times.

Maricopa County shows a case rate of 2,452 cases per 100,000 residents, using 2019 estimates. The state rate is 2,251. Santa Cruz County has the highest at 5,413 cases per 100,000 residents.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people. The vast majority of people who are diagnosed with COVID-19 recover.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, and death.

Meanwhile, the number of in-patient COVID-19 hospitalizations as well as patients on ventilators and in intensive care unit beds showed very slight declines. But experts say it’s too soon to say whether Arizona is on a definite downward trend since Gov. Doug Ducey extended the closing of businesses like bars and gyms.
