Arizona tops 156,000 cases of COVID-19

The Arizona Department of Health Services is reporting over 156,000 cases of COVID-19 as of Friday morning.

In Arizona, there are 156,301 cases and 3,142 deaths of the novel coronavirus, up 3,349 and 79 from Thursday morning, respectively. That computes to a 2.01% death rate of confirmed cases in the state.

The number of cases could be far higher because many people have not been tested, and some can be infected without feeling sick.

Arizona — the 14th most populous state in the U.S. — is one of 12 states with over 100,000 cases.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 103,862 cases and 1,654 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county. State and county numbers differ depending on reporting times.

Maricopa County shows a case rate of 2,332 cases per 100,000 residents, using 2019 estimates. The state rate is 2,147. Santa Cruz County has the highest at 5,273 cases per 100,000 residents.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, and death.
