ASU announces plans for Medical School headquarters in Phoenix

A new facility added to Arizona State University’s downtown Phoenix Campus will be home to The School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering.

The site, officials said, aims to teach future physicians how to improve patient care by blending medicine, engineering, technology, and the humanities.

The structure is estimated to be more than 200,000 square feet on a Phoenix-owned lot between Fillmore and Pierce between Fourth and Fifth  streets. Designers CO Architects and DFDG Architecture are working with McCarthy Building Companies for the structure.

“This endeavor is more than a building, and this is much more than a medical school,” said ASU President Michael Crow in a statement.

The new school is projected to generate about 200,000 more jobs and $19 billion in statewide economic growth. Construction is set to begin in early 2026, and ASU Health will commence classes in the new building in fall 2028.

Facility features are projected to include virtual anatomy and clinical-skills laboratories, exam rooms, classrooms, study spaces, administrative offices, and a simulation center with mock operating and emergency rooms.

Further, the new ASU Health headquarters will offer community-facing programs so members of the public can interface with technology-enabled information on health-related issues of all kinds.

“ASU’s forward-thinking approach to preparing future medical and health service professionals and advancing community health education is plainly demonstrated by this progressive project,” said Carlos Diaz, vice president of operations at McCarthy Building Cos. in a statement.

“We’ve been challenged to design a facility for emerging generations of physicians and health professionals who will embrace the latest technologies and research in their practices,” added Jonathan Kanda, FAIA, principal for Medical Education at CO Architects in a press release.

ASU will work with HonorHealth as a clinical partner and include space for affiliated programs and staff onsite.
