OPINION — We all benefit from the contributions, resilience and wisdom of older adults in our communities, but often we fail to shine a light on a quieter, often hidden challenge that is impacting seniors at an alarming rate: loneliness.
In 2023, one in three adults ages 50 to 80 reported feeling isolated from others — 29% some of the time, 5% often. Additionally, about 1 in 3 U.S. adults say they lack meaningful social connection.
These sobering statistics represent real people navigating life transitions like retirement, loss of a spouse, children moving away or health challenges that limit mobility and connection.
