Arizona school districts growing teachers from within to fight shortages

Deer Valley Unified, for one, is in the early stages of its own program

Alternative pathways for educator certification and school districts around the state have one thing in common: those in the program want to become full-time teachers, and districts facing shortages want them as full-time teachers.

More of these pathways are growing across Arizona, which remains precariously understaffed with teachers at schools.

The Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association reported in February that more than 25% of teacher positions across the state this year remain unfilled. As districts grapple with that reality, 44% of the vacancies are filled by teachers who do not meet the state’s standard certification requirements.
