Arizona recreational marijuana paves way for restorative criminal justice reform

With recreational marijuana creating new economic energy cannabis advocates, proprietors and legal professionals contend a landmark legal precedent is being set — one that could improve the lives for an estimated tens of thousands of Arizona residents.

Beginning this summer, about 12,000 residents will be afforded a chance to petition various courts of law to have certain marijuana offenses expunged from their legal records.

Arizona voters approved the legalization of recreational use of marijuana during the 2020 November election, which allows residents 21 years or older to consume the plant free of criminal ramifications.
